About Dr. Deist

Dr. Mark Deist is a distinguished ophthalmologist at  Sandhurst Eye Centre in Sandton. He achieved his medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Cape Town in 1983. Later, he specialized in ophthalmology and obtained his ophthalmic degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1993. He has practiced in Johannesburg ever since and developed a strong focus on anterior segment surgery. Notably, his expertise covers laser vision correction, refractive procedures, corneal transplant, and refractive cataract surgery. In addition, he performs specialized procedures for the treatment of keratoconus.

Furthermore, Dr. Deist is a founding member of Sandhurst Eye Centre. His vision helped create a facility that caters to all aspects of eye care—from managing medical ophthalmic disorders to performing complicated ocular surgeries. Moreover, he introduced femtosecond laser treatments at the centre, becoming the first surgeon in South Africa to implement all-laser corneal transplantation and laser intrastromal rings for keratoconus. His innovative techniques have significantly advanced eye care in the region.

In addition, he actively supports the development of young surgeons. He runs an extensive program to help them acquire skills in advanced laser vision correction, keratoconus surgeries, and all-laser corneal transplantation. Additionally, he introduced the use of multifocal intraocular implants for refractive cataract surgery. This groundbreaking technique paves the way toward complete spectacle freedom for many patients.
